Environmental Penalties are monetary penalties that can be imposed by the Ministry of the Environment. The Ministry publishes by March 31 each year a report of Environmental Penalties issued in the previous calendar year.
This section provides information about Environmental Penalty orders issued to companies who are subject to the Environmental Penalty Regulation 222/07 under the Environmental Protection Act and Environmental Penalty Regulation 223/07 under the Ontario Water Resources Act. The information is taken from orders issued to companies.
Money collected from environmental penalties is intended to be made available for projects in the community (“affected community”) impacted by spills/violations through the Ontario Community Environment Fund (OCEF). Available funding to eligible groups undertaking projects within an affected community will be equal to payments received for that community in the previous calendar year. The ministry’s OCEF website will include information on the application process, including the types of eligible projects and a list of eligible groups who may apply for funding. Please check back in Spring 2009.
