How do the fine particulate matter readings in Clarkson compare to air quality in other communities in southern Ontario?
In 2007, Mississauga, including Clarkson, exceeded the 24 hour standard for fine particulate matter on 5 days. In comparison, Brampton exceeded the 24 hour standard for fine particulate matter on 5 days, Oakville and Burlington on 6 days, Toronto on 7 days, Hamilton on 8 days, St. Catharines on 11 days and Sarnia on 16 days. See page 16 of the Air Quality in Ontario 2007 Report.
What are the findings of the ministry’s 2007 Acrolein and Acrylonitrile Report?
Part 2 of the Clarkson Airshed Study identified that two volatile organic compounds (VOCs) — acrolein and acrylonitrile — exceeded their ambient air quality criteria on occasion. Additional sampling for these compounds near industrial emission sources indicated that exceedances of acrylonitrile were no longer an issue. Acrolein exceedances were observed but it was not possible to attribute them to particular industrial sources.
The ministry will conduct additional sampling for VOCs, including acrolein, starting in May 2009 to identify individual sources and their relative contributions. If the ministry can identify the particular source or sources, we will take action to ensure they comply with O. Reg. 419.
