Ontario’s greenhouse gas reduction targets

Go Green: Ontario’s Action Plan on Climate Change sets ambitious but realistic targets:

  • Together, we will reduce Ontario’s greenhouse gas emissions to six per cent below 1990 levels by 2014 – a reduction of 61 megatonnes relative to business-as-usual
  • By 2020 Ontario will reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 15 per cent below 1990 levels – a reduction of 99 megatonnes relative to business-as-usual
  • By 2050 we will reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 80 per cent below 1990 levels

These targets put Ontario among the leaders in addressing climate change. No place in Canada is committed to producing more real reductions than Ontario.

These are real, achievable goals—reductions in greenhouse gases will help us address climate change and establish a green, competitive economy.

Adapting To Climate Change

Climate change will affect public and private infrastructure, the natural environment, people and other species. The world’s climate experts tell us that the volume of greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere means Ontario will still experience the effects of climate change, no matter what1. That’s why we need to take steps to adapt.

An Expert Panel on Adaptation has been appointed to look at the effects of climate change on Ontario and advise the government on how we can best adapt. The panel includes members from environmental non-government organizations and experts in the field of climate change adaptation, engineers and health specialists, as well as representatives of Ontario’s First Nations and northern communities.
