| The actions of just
one person can influence those of so many others.
Here are some things you can do that will make others
take notice:
- Say “No, thank you!” to plastic
bags when you’re out shopping. Bring your knapsack
or another type of reusable bag with you and use it to
pack up your purchases!
- Wrap gifts in reusable materials. Once your
creative juices are flowing, you can have a lot of fun
with this! Use your imagination and think far beyond
traditional wrapping paper. Put your gift in a funky
cloth bag or a colourful plastic container (both of
which you can find at a dollar store!), and the person
who receives the gift will be able to keep the “wrapping”
in lots of other ways.
- Instead of using disposable plates, cups and
cutlery when you have a party, go for plastic, reusable
ones (try a dollar store for these too!). That way,
no one has to worry about broken dishes, or cutlery
that may accidentally be thrown in the garbage, and
you’ll be reducing waste and saving money every
time you have a party!
- Start an Environment Club at your school. Try
to get a teacher or guidance counselor to help you with
it. Together with the members of your club, find ways
to make your school a little more eco-friendly. Here
are some things to think about:
- Does your school have enough recycling bins? Composting
bins?
- Do students and staff know what can go in each type
of bin?
- Are lights and/or computers frequently left on in empty
classrooms?
Brainstorm clever ways to solve some of the problems your
club discusses. Get as many people as you can on board,
and you’ll be amazed to see how much you accomplish!
