CLEAN HARBORS CANADA, INC. FINED $42,500 FOR OPERATING VEHICLES THAT ARE NOT LEAKPROOF

SARNIA – Clean Harbors Canada, Inc. has been fined $42,500, plus a victim fine surcharge, after pleading guilty to five counts of operating vehicles that were not leakproof.

The company operates a hazardous waste disposal site located at 4090 Telfer Road, near Corunna, Ontario, and has a fleet of waste transportation vehicles that are authorized to carry waste.

The Court heard that a number of Clean Harbors waste transportation vehicles were inspected over a period of five months and five leaking vehicles were documented on four different dates.

Clean Harbors was charged following an investigation by the Ministry of the Environment’s Investigations and Enforcement Branch.

Clean Harbors Canada, Inc. pleaded guilty to five counts of operating a waste management system with a vehicle body not leakproof, contrary to s. 16(1) of Regulation 347 under the Environmental Protection Act. It was fined $42,500, plus a victim fine surcharge, and given 60 days to pay.

Justice of the Peace Robert Ponton heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice in Sarnia, Ontario, and imposed sentence on November 19, 2007.
