THUNDER BAY — Burstrom’s Resort Ltd. has been fined a total of $10,000 plus a victim fine surcharge, after pleading guilty on October 24, 2008 to five violations under the Safe Drinking Water Act. The violations included: failing to ensure water treatment equipment is in operation when water is being supplied to the system; failing to provide minimum treatment requirements; failing to analyze microbiological samples; failing to conduct sampling or to test for free chlorine residual; and failing to immediately report an adverse test result to the ministry. The company was given one year to pay the fine.
The Court heard that Burstrom’s Resort Ltd. operates a seasonal and year round residential trailer park on Shebandowan Lake in the District of Thunder Bay. The resort operates two drinking water systems. The Non-Municipal Year Round Residential System, which services six year round residents of the park, was inspected by ministry staff. The inspection revealed numerous issues of non-compliance.
Burstrom’s Resort Ltd. was charged following an investigation by the Ministry of the Environment’s Investigations and Enforcement Branch.
