OTTAWA — Dyno Nobel Canada Inc. has been fined $35,000 plus a victim fine surcharge, after pleading guilty on December 11, 2008 to failing to notify the ministry of a discharge of a contaminant, namely flyrock, into the natural environment. The company was given 45 days to pay the fine.
The Court heard that Dyno Nobel Canada Inc. is a company headquartered in Calgary that provides blasting services. The company was contracted to conduct a blast at a quarry in Ottawa. The blast resulted in a large shower of flyrock leaving the quarry property, damaging nearby businesses and vehicles. Dyno Nobel did not notify the ministry of this discharge.
Dyno Nobel Canada Inc. was charged following an investigation by the Ministry of the Environment’s Investigations and Enforcement Branch.
Dyno Nobel Canada Inc. has paid approximately $55,000 to neighbouring property owners to reimburse for the damage.
