YORK REGION – On August 31, 2009, Associated Industries Corp. was fined $20,000, Deokallie Prasaud was fined $7,000 and Andrew Haniff was fined $1,000 totaling $28,000 plus victim fine surcharges. The company and Mr. Prasaud pleaded guilty to operating a waste disposal site without a Certificate of Approval. Mr. Haniff pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a condition of a Certificate of Approval by failing to transport waste in a covered vehicle. They were each given one year to pay the fine.
The Court heard that the company was operating as a waste management company hauling non-hazardous waste. On May 31, 2007 and June 6, 2007, a number of company bins containing wastes were stored at the rear of a Petro Canada service station in Markham which is an unapproved waste disposal site. Mr. Prasaud is the sole Director of AIC, and Mr. Haniff was observed driving one of AIC’s vehicles.
The company, Mr. Prasaud and Mr. Haniff were charged following an investigation by the Ministry of the Environment’s Investigations and Enforcement Branch.
