Orangeville – On September 9, 2009, Region of Huronia Environmental Services Inc. was fined $6,000 plus a victim fine surcharge after pleading guilty to exceeding the maximum sludge spreading rate allowed under its approval, contrary to the Environmental Protection Act. The Region of Huronia Environmental Services Inc. was given thirty days to pay the fine.
The Court heard that the Region of Huronia Environmental Services Inc. operates throughout Southern Ontario and is involved in the land-application of municipal biosolids. Each site where biosolids are going to be land-applied requires an Organic Soil Conditioning Site approval issued by the ministry. In October 2008, ministry officials inspected the site and noticed that the company had exceeded the maximum sludge spreading rate in its approval when applying biosolids to the site.
The Region of Huronia Environmental Services Inc. was charged following an investigation by the Ministry of the Environment’s Investigations and Enforcement Branch.
