OTTAWA — On September 17, 2009, Alfin Aluminum Finishes Inc. pleaded guilty to the unlawful storage and containment of subject waste.
In September 2008, a ministry official conducted an inspection of the company’s electronics anodizing and plating business located on Auriga Drive in Ottawa. The inspection revealed that the company was storing a significant amount of used chemicals that are classified as subject waste. Following an investigation by the ministry’s Investigations and Enforcement Branch, the company was charged with: failing to store, handle and maintain subject waste in a manner that prevented leaks or spills; storing waste for greater than 24 months without applying for a Certificate of Approval; and storing waste for longer than 90 days without filing a subject waste storage report with the ministry. The company was fined a total of $3,500 plus applicable victim fine surcharges for the three offences and was given 180 days to pay.
