ALFIN ALUMINUM FINISHES INC. FINED $3,500 FOR THE UNLAWFUL STORAGE AND CONTAINMENT OF SUBJECT WASTE

OTTAWAOn September 17, 2009, Alfin Aluminum Finishes Inc. pleaded guilty to the unlawful storage and containment of subject waste.

In September 2008, a ministry official conducted an inspection of the company’s electronics anodizing and plating business located on Auriga Drive in Ottawa. The inspection revealed that the company was storing a significant amount of used chemicals that are classified as subject waste.  Following an investigation by the ministry’s Investigations and Enforcement Branch, the company was charged with: failing to store, handle and maintain subject waste in a manner that prevented leaks or spills; storing waste for greater than 24 months without applying for a Certificate of Approval; and storing waste for longer than 90 days without filing a subject waste storage report with the ministry.  The company was fined a total of $3,500 plus applicable victim fine surcharges for the three offences and was given 180 days to pay.
