TURTLE ISLAND RECYCLING CORPORATION AND LEONIDAS ANAGNOSTAKOS FINED $70,000 FOR WASTE VIOLATIONS

TORONTO — Turtle Island Recycling Corporation, formerly known as Turtle Island Holdings Corporation, and Leonidas (Louis) Anagnostakos have been fined a total of $70,000 plus applicable victim fine surcharges after being convicted on September 17, 2009 of violations under the Environmental Protection Act. 

The Court heard that Turtle Island Recycling Corporation operates a waste management company located at 242 Cherry Street in Toronto.  Mr. Anagnostakos is the Chief Operating Officer, a Director, co-founder and a part owner of the corporation.  Inspections by ministry officials between November 2005 and February 2008 revealed repeated violations of various requirements of the company’s Certificate of Approval.  As a result a Provincial Officer’s Order was issued to the company. Turtle Island Recycling Corporation failed to comply with the Order by the required deadline.

The company was convicted of illegally storing waste materials outdoors at the site, failing to maintain daily logs, failing to submit annual reports for 2005 and 2006, and failing to submit changes to the Design and Operations Report when the relocation of a conveyor occurred, all contrary to the terms of the company’s Certificate of Approval. The company was further convicted of failing to comply with terms of a Provincial Officer’s Order requiring that the annual reports for 2005 and 2006 be submitted, and that daily logs be submitted.  Mr. Aganostakos was convicted of failing to submit the company’s 2005 annual report.

The company was and Mr. Anagnostakos were charged following an investigation by the Ministry of the Environment’s Investigations and Enforcement Branch.

The company was fined $65,000 and Mr. Anagnostakos was fined $5,000 plus victim fine surcharges.  They were given two years to pay.
