OWEN SOUND – On September 17, 2009, Pit-On Construction Company Inc. was fined a total of $16,000 plus victim fine surcharges. The company pled guilty to various charges related to hauling and handling waste without proper approval. The company was given six months to pay the fines.
The Court heard that during the summer of 2007, the company removed residential development demolition and construction debris and transported and deposited the waste on Part Lot 9, in the Ninth Range East of Garafraza Road in Owen Sound. An employee of the company then set fire to the waste. Following an emergency fire response, Provincial Officers were contacted to inspect the mounds of waste on the property. The inspection revealed that the company was not approved by the ministry to transport waste or act as a waste management system. In addition, it was not approved by the ministry as a waste disposal site. The company removed the waste to a certified waste disposal site, however, it used its own trucks to transport the waste, even though it was not certified to act as a waste management system.
The company was charged following an investigation by the Ministry of the Environment’s Investigations and Enforcement Branch
