LINDSAY – On September 29, 2009, Van Drunen & Sons Gravel Limited, also known as Oshawa Sand and Gravel, was fined a total of $10,000 plus victim fine surcharges. The company pleaded guilty to using and operating a waste disposal site without proper approval. The fine was paid immediately following the conviction.
The Court heard that the company was hired to haul contaminated soils from a brownfield site in Toronto to a licensed facility in Sudbury. A quantity of the contaminated waste soils had been stored in Toronto after a break down occurred at the Sudbury facility since it was unable to accept the remaining contaminated soils at that time. The company hauled these contaminated soils to its unapproved gravel pit located in the City of Kawartha Lakes.
The company was charged following an investigation by the Ministry of the Environment’s Investigations and Enforcement Branch.
