Laboratory analyses of DWSP samples are provided by the MOE and the Ministry of Labour’s Radiation Protection Monitoring Service. Results are stored electronically and transferred to a database where they are subject to rigorous screening and verification in order to ensure quality controlled data.
Drinking water samples collected by municipal partners are shipped to an accredited government laboratory for scientific analysis. Sample results are used by program partners and by MOE to investigate important issues in drinking water.
DWSP follows the protocols specified in the Drinking Water Systems Regulation (O. Reg. 170/03) that require notification of drinking water systems, the Medical Officer of Health and the MOE if a test result is above the Ontario Drinking Water Quality Standard Maximum Concentration (O. Reg. 169/03) or if a test result indicates adverse water quality. The Medical Officer of Health, under the Health Protection and Promotion Act (Chapter 10, Part 3, Sections 10 to 13) has the authority to judge if drinking water is safe for human consumption.
