The first step to becoming a certified drinking water operator is to get your Operator-in-training (OIT) certificate.
With an OIT certificate, you can work in a municipal drinking water system and gain the one-year experience that is needed to become a Class 1 operator.
To apply for an OIT certificate, you need to:
- have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent;
- pass the OIT examination;
- apply for a certificate;
- pay the exam and certificate fee.

An OIT certificate is valid for 16 months. You must pass the entry-level drinking water operator course, before your certificate can be extended.
