Becoming a Wastewater Operator

The first step to becoming a licensed wastewater operator is to get your Operator-in-training (OIT) certificate.

With an OIT certificate, you can work in a municipal wastewater system and gain the one-year experience that is needed to become a Class 1 operator. To apply for an OIT certificate, you need to:

  1. have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent;
  2. pass the OIT examination;
  3. apply for a certificate.

Once you have your OIT certificate, it is valid for 3 years. Learn more about how to renew your certificate.
