General Motors of Canada Ltd.

At General Motors of Canada Ltd., improved global environmental quality is a priority that everyone at the company shares. All Ontario manufacturing facilities have achieved ISO14001 certification and voluntarily reduced Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions by 50 per cent per vehicle in its car assembly plant as a result of a $600 million state-of-the-art new paint shop investment.

General Motors of Canada Ltd. (GMCL) and all seven of its Ontario facilities joined the Ontario's Environmental Leaders program on June 6, 2007.

The company works to reduce emissions from its manufacturing operations and vehicles by following The General Motors of Canada Ltd. Environmental Principles. In addition, its Environmental Policy commits to continuous improvement in reducing waste and reusing or recycling materials.

It is the only automaker in Canada to voluntarily report facility-based GHG emissions and has been recognized as a Gold Champion Reporter by the Canadian Standards Association GHG Challenge Registry for the past eight years. GMCL has reduced GHG emissions by 42 per cent since 1990, more than any other automaker with manufacturing facilities in Canada.

Through a partnership with the Clean Air Foundation’s award winning Car Heaven program, GMCL has supported the accelerated retirement of more than 12,000 old vehicles from Canadian roads, an amount equal to the emissions of more than 230,000 new vehicles. The CAA has recognized GMCL with “Pyramid Awards” for unique environmental initiatives two years running.
