The first chemical company to join Ontario’s Environmental Leaders Program, Rohn and Haas works on developing safer technology for chemical manufacture, removing waste streams from the production process and minimizing or eliminating the use of hazardous materials. This includes an agreement to target a 50 per cent reduction of 2-Ethylhexanol emissions, compared to a 2003 baseline.
The Rohm and Haas’ West Hill plant is part of the Architectural and Functional Coatings business and produces over 120 different Acrylic-Emulsion recipes. These high performance emulsions are used in several different industries and about half of the produced volume is exported outside of Canada.
From 1991 to 2003, Rohm and Haas’ ISO 14001-registered West Hill facility reduced its emissions to air by more than 65 per cent for compounds reportable to the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) and under Ontario Regulation 127.
Rohm and Haas agreed to target a 50 per cent reduction of 2-Ethylhexanol emissions, compared to 2003 baseline values; conduct an energy audit, including infrared scans of buildings, to detect energy losses as part of its greenhouse gas evaluation strategy.
The company works to develop inherently safer technology for chemical manufacture, remove waste streams from the production process and minimize or eliminate the use of hazardous materials.
Its approach to Risk Assessment and Management is rooted in a commitment to the principles of Responsible Care as it strives to achieve a vision of no incidents, injuries or harm to the environment. The program has resulted in significant reductions in releases to air, land and water, major improvements in workplace and community safety, and expanded programs to research and test chemicals for potential health and environmental impacts.
Rohm and Haas’ West Hill site is the founding member of the TE-CAER (Toronto East Community Awareness and Emergency Response Association) and CAP (Community Advisory Panel) West Hill.
