Teknion is a manufacturer and marketer of mid- to high-end office systems and furniture products. For 2009, Teknion set targets for electricity reduction of 10 per cent, particulate reduction of 50 per cent, increased waste diversion of 20 per cent and a 10 per cent reduction in pollutants resulting from reduced natural gas consumption.
When Teknion entered the contract office furniture market in 1983, it employed 25 people at one 30,000-square-foot facility in its headquarters in Toronto. Today, with 3,900 employees and approximately 2.7 million square feet of facilities worldwide, Teknion has evolved into a leading international designer, manufacturer and marketer of mid- to high-end office systems and related furniture products.
Teknion has sales offices, showrooms and two dozen manufacturing and warehousing facilities in Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and Malaysia. Products are sold worldwide through a network of more than 375 authorized dealers.
In its commitment to sustainable development Teknion has many accomplishments including:
- Industrial Energy Innovators Award in 2005 from the Government of Canada for its outstanding efforts in improving energy efficiency
- being the first office furniture manufacturer to have all major product lines Greenguard Certified for Indoor Air Quality and to have all of its manufacturing facilities and administrative offices certified to the ISO 14001 environmental management system
- becoming the first office furniture manufacturer to have all of its major product lines and manufacturing facilities in Canada certified to the Environmental Choice Program
- receiving the Chain-of-Custody certification from The Forest Stewardship Council
- strategically aligning its product portfolio and information systems support to the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating and certification program developed by the U.S. Green Building Council and 23 of its North American employees earned LEED Accreditation by successfully demonstrating their knowledge of green building design, practices and strategies
- membership in EXCEL (Excellence in Corporate Environmental Leadership);
- Teknion’s Origami line of wood casegoods represents the company’s most thorough application of Design for the Environment principles to date.
