Trillium Health Centre is a two-site health facility serving over one million residents in the Greater Toronto Area. It has redefined the boundaries of community health care delivery by making great strides in solid waste reduction, hazardous substance management, biomedical waste management, emissions reduction, energy conservation and water quality management. It committed to reduce mercury usage by 98 per cent and to divert waste by an additional 30 per cent.
In November 2005, Trillium Health Centre became a member of Ontario’s Environmental Leaders (OEL) Program and is the first health care facility to join the program.
Trillium Health Centre is one of Canada’s leading community hospitals, with expanding tertiary care programs in cardiac care, stroke, orthopaedics and neurosurgery. Serving over one million residents in Mississauga, West Toronto and from other communities across the province, Trillium has redefined the boundaries of community health care delivery.
In June 2004, Trillium successfully implemented an Environmental Management System (EMS) and is recognized by The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), making Trillium the first multi-site hospital in the world to be awarded ISO 14001 registration.
Since the implementation of its EMS, Trillium has made great strides in solid waste reduction, hazardous substance management, and biomedical waste management, emissions reduction, energy conservation, and water quality management.
Trillium committed to reducing mercury usage by 98 per cent by April 2006 and to diverting waste by an additional 30 per cent by 2008. It also held community mercury thermometer trade-in days at each of the Mississauga and West Toronto facilities.
