Duncan Sinclair, a resident of Aylmer, is responsible for developing the Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) at East Elgin Secondary School. This group of 25 high school students organizes an outreach program called MarshQuest which educates over 500 grade four students annually on the importance of wetlands in the environment.
The students learn various ways to protect the wetlands. They also learn about current conservation practices. Students visit a wetland for first-hand experience of the many benefits provided. They interact with wildlife and gain awareness and appreciation of these fragile ecosystems.
Year after year, Sinclair coordinates fundraising which generates thousands of dollars to maintain the program, becoming a integral program in the community.
John and Rosemary Dunsmore of Shanty Bay have made several significant contributions to protecting the environment in the Township of Oro-Medonte.
They have undertaken projects that include environmental benefits such as improving Lake Simcoe water quality, protecting endangered species, reducing their farm’s environmental footprint, protecting forest and wetlands, and contributing to the expansion of recreational trails in the township.
The Dunsmores donated over $100,000 to the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority to purchase 2 acres of lakeshore and wetlands that was threatened with development.
Their innovative approach to environmental protection demonstrates what ordinary citizens can accomplish through leading by example.
