
Norjohn Limited is based in Burlington, Ontario and produces water-based emulsions for a range of products, from asphalt to fibreglass. In 2007, close to 25 per cent of the company’s total wax emulsion sales contained formaldehyde, a highly toxic material linked to increased risks of cancer. To protect the health and safety of its workers, reduce air pollution and offer greener options to consumers, Norjohn Limited eliminated formaldehyde from its production processes and decreased the use of petroleum products.

As a result of its innovative use of bio-based emulsions, Norjohn Limited has had interest and inquiries from other companies to use them in making bio-degradable plant pots, oven cleaners, fiberglass, manufactured wood products and gypsum board.
Norjohn Limited is actively sharing knowledge about its bio-based initiative and engaging schools and organizations on green initiatives. The company developed an EARTH First program that sets out principles to reduce impact and sets goals for innovation and environmental performance. The company also participated and funded clean-ups and plantings along Appleby Creek in Burlington.
