Background
General Mills is one of the world’s leading food companies, operating in more than 100 countries. It is known for brands such as Cheerios, Pillsbury, Betty Crocker, Green Giant and Hamburger Helper. General Mills Canada Corporation opened in 1954 with plants across the country. The Midland plant is located on the south shore of Georgian Bay.
The company recognizes the economic and environmental benefits of greening its operations. In the last few years, it has implemented initiatives to reduce its waste production, electricity consumption and water use. Health and community stewardship initiatives have also been promoted as part of an integrative approach.
Taking action
The Midland plant has implemented the following measures:
- installation of a closed loop refrigeration system
- cleaning the plant with low flow water guns
- high-efficiency lighting
- re-insulation of outside walls to reduce heat loss
- banning disposable coffee cups
- employee environmental committee which monitors recycling efforts and develops new measures to reduce waste
- employee engagement in sustainable manufacturing processes through training and written policies and procedures
Achieving results
- Water conservation: 1 million gallons of water are saved each month.
- Increased waste diversion: The amount of solid waste decreased by 30.5 per cent, which is 16 tons less than last year. Almost all the waste generated in the plant (96 per cent) is now recycled.
- Reduced electricity use due to a lighting project: Electricity costs dropped from $5,300 to $800 in one year.
General Mills opened its first buildings that conformed to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards in 2010.
The company has made additional gains in reducing greenhouse gases and packaging, and promoting sustainable agriculture, waste and water management—advances which can inspire others in the industry.
