Program or Service Description:
These two key Ministry programs ensure the protection and safety of drinking water in Ontario through the inspection, compliance monitoring and licensure of municipal residential drinking water systems.
These drinking water systems must be licensed by the Ministry of the Environment. Drinking Water Inspectors conduct inspections of these systems and promote compliance with Ontario legislation. They also respond to incidents of non-compliance and Adverse Water Quality Incidents (AWQIs).

We are committed to the OPS service principles (i.e., accessible, responsive, reliable, caring, accountable; consistent, predictable, transparent, continuous improvement) and OPS common service standards (i.e., response times to general phone calls, mail, email, fax) as outlined in the ministry's service charter.
Program- or Service-specific Standards:
The Ministry commits to the following legislated program standards:
- Inspection of 667 Ontario municipal water treatment facilities annually;
- Provision of final inspection reports to drinking water system owners/operators within 45 calendar days of the completion of the inspection; and,
- Mandatory action taken within 14 calendar days of finding a deficiency
