We're modernizing the Drive Clean program

Drive Clean plays an important role in safeguarding Ontario’s air quality by identifying excessively polluting cars and trucks with emissions problems and requiring them to be repaired. While today’s vehicles are cleaner through advances in emissions technology, all vehicles require regular maintenance to keep them operating properly.

Over the past decade, Drive Clean has tightened emissions standards and focused the program on the vehicles that are most likely to pollute. Ontario is introducing changes to take advantage of the computerized emissions monitoring equipment in today’s technologically advanced vehicles to make the Drive Clean program even better.

Ontario is also modernizing its administration and support of the program.

The modernized Drive Clean program, which will be fully implemented by January 1, 2013, is intended to provide significant benefits by:

The Ministry of the Environment will work with its stakeholders to fully implement the new emissions tests for light-duty vehicles (passenger cars, vans, sport utility vehicles and light trucks with a GVWR or GCWR of 4,500 kg or less).
