There will be changes to training and certification during the transition to the modernized Drive Clean program.
During the transition period, training will be provided for facility staff on the new Ontario testing unit. Training for the existing test will continue to be provided, where needed.
Drive Clean staff who are currently certified will be exempt from inspector and repair technician re-certification requirements on the dynamometer between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2012. Training on the dynamometer will continue to be available for new Drive Clean facility staff until December 31, 2012.
Training for the modernized Drive Clean program is expected to become available in late 2011. No further information is available at this time.

One of the key features of the modernized Drive Clean program is the capacity for computer-based registration and training.
Ministry-approved support staff will be able to review repairs that are flagged by the Drive Clean information system on a real time basis and interrupt the repair process if inappropriate repairs appear to be underway.
If improper repairs are identified, particularly on a vehicle proposed for a conditional pass, the auditor will contact the repair technician to discuss the repair.
In the new Drive Clean program, repair technicians will be required to enter all vehicle repair information into a new Drive Clean repair database. Repair records will be reviewed by support staff and repairs that are deemed inadequate will receive audit follow-up that may include contacting the repair technician to discuss the repairs.
Repair technician performance will be continually evaluated. In order to ensure service quality, the Drive Clean office may require repair technicians to undergo additional training if they have a history of performance that does not meet program standards.
