About the Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund
The Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund helps communities take action to restore and protect our Great Lakes.
In 2012, grants of up to $25,000 for up to 100% of eligible project costs are being provided for projects that take place in Ontario anywhere within the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River basin. The basin includes: Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, Lake Superior, the St. Lawrence River, the Ottawa River, and their watersheds. Please look at the map in the application guide to see where a project could take place.
- Projects must contribute to at least one of the following Great Lakes goals (you can learn more about them in Ontario’s Draft Great Lakes Strategy):
- Empowering communities: Create opportunities for groups and organizations to become involved in the protection and restoration of the ecological health of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River Basin.
- Protecting water: Protect the quality and quantity of water in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River Basin.
- Improving wetlands, beaches and coastal areas: Protect and restore wetlands, beaches and other coastal areas of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River Basin.
- Protecting habitats and species: Protect and restore the natural habitats and biodiversity of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River Basin.
