Compliance and Monitoring

The ministry is committed to ensuring proponents comply with the commitments they made in their environmental assessment (EA) and with the conditions of their approval. To that end, there are two components of compliance:

Compliance monitoring

Compliance monitoring is an assessment of whether a project has been implemented according to commitments made in the EA and the conditions of approval.

The EA must include a monitoring framework that considers all phases for the proposed project such as construction and decommissioning. The proponent must provide annual compliance monitoring reports to the ministry.

Effects monitoring

Effects monitoring is used after EA project approval to:
