Registering for and complying with a technical standard is an alternative to complying with the air standards that are based on contaminant concentrations.
Under O. Reg. 419/05, there is the authority to allow certain facilities to register under a technical standard which would replace the current compliance requirements with other technical and operational requirements.
There are two types of technical standards: industry standards that deal with all sources of contaminants (for specified contaminants) from a specific sector; and equipment standards that may apply to one or more sectors but only address one source of a contaminant (for specified contaminants).
Although industries participating in the technical standards may not meet certain concentration standards in O. Reg. 419/05, they are still expected to make continuous improvements to reduce air emissions to the extent that technology makes it possible.
