Emissions Trading

Emissions trading is a cost-effective tool that has been introduced to reduce emissions of NOX and SO2 from electricity and industrial facilities in Ontario.

Emissions Trading Code

The Ontario Emissions Trading Code supplements Ontario Regulations 397/01 and 194/05 governing emissions trading made under the Environmental Protection Act.

The Trading Code provides specific information about emissions trading requirements and sets out the rules for the operation of the Emissions Trading Registry.

It also describes the rules for facilities that are not regulated under the emissions trading program. These rules relate to reducing emissions and creating emissions reduction credits for use by the regulated facilities.

Emissions Trading Registry

Ontario’s Emissions Trading Registry tracks the creation, transfer and use of emissions allowances and emission-reduction credits issued under the Emissions Trading Regulation.  It also allows the public to review and comment on all documentation submitted in support of an application to create an Emission Reduction Credit, or an application to have a Set-Aside Reduction approved.
