The Ministry of the Environment is announcing that Quantum Murray LP is the successful contractor for the Pottersburg Storage Site Decommissioning project. The plans submitted by Quantum Murray LP were evaluated in great detail and met the ministry’s requirements as outlined in the request for proposals process. The project timelines also ensure that the ministry is in compliance with the federal government’s new regulation requiring the removal of all PCB waste from storage facilities by December 31, 2009 and their destruction by December 31, 2010.
It was also important for the successful contractor to ensure that measures will be taken to protect the safety and health of the public during the project. In response to feedback from the Community Liaison Group the installation of an enclosure over the work area will assist in preventing dust or water from leaving the site. In addition, the successful contractor’s plans focus on:
In March, 2008 the province announced funding for the removal and destruction of the PCB contaminated sediment, soil and debris stored at the Pottersburg PCB Storage Site in London Ontario. This project is part of the province’s commitment to reduce toxics in the environment and promotes safe, clean, liveable communities throughout Ontario.
The Pottersburg PCB storage site was created in the mid 1980’s to store material from a cleanup of PCB contaminated soil and sediment found on a number of industrial properties: Westinghouse Canada - now owned by Asea Brown Boveri; UOP Ltd. - operating as Wolverine Tube; and General Motors of Canada Ltd, and in downstream waterways (Walker Drain and Pottersburg Creek) in the City of London.
The ministry recognizes the importance of keeping the community informed. It will continue to do so through the Community Liaison Group public meetings, the dedicated Pottersburg website and regular public update meetings throughout the project. Quantum Murray LP has also committed to outreach opportunities with the community such as a quarterly newsletter and status reports
The first public update meeting to introduce the successful contractor will be held Thursday, February 19th 2009 at 6:30pm at Fanshawe College.
