The primary purpose of this guideline is to protect human health and the environment by restricting the use of holding tanks in sewage systems. Systems which use holding tanks are expensive to operate and do not constitute a sufficiently reliable system for dealing with raw sewage on an ongoing basis. The use of holding tanks may be allowed in certain circumstances, provided that the municipality involved is willing to accept the responsibility for the disposal of the holding tank contents.

This annual report, the 41st in a series, summarizes the state of ambient air quality in Ontario during 2011 and examines 10-year trends. It reports on the measured levels of six common air pollutants: ground-level ozone (O3), fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and total reduced sulphur (TRS) compounds. To assist businesses with completing their applications for an Environmental Compliance Approval, the Ministry of the Environment has developed the Environmental Compliance Approval application and the Guide to Applying for an Environmental Compliance Approval.

The ministry has also developed the Checklist for Technical Requirements for a Complete Environmental Compliance Approval Submission, which will be used by ministry staff to review and assess each application against the legislative and ministry requirements. The checklist clearly sets out a two-pronged test to determine whether the submission is sufficiently complete.

In October 2012, a new regulation came into force requiring producers of pharmaceuticals and sharps to provide for the collection and safe environmental management of their leftover products from consumers by January 1, 2013. Producers must also provide Ontarians with access to free and convenient collection locations, such as pharmacies, to return their leftover pharmaceuticals and sharps.
