WINDSOR - On April 24, 2012, 38 Chatham Street East Ltd. pled guilty to one violation under the Environmental Protection Act for the release of anhydrous ammonia gas into the natural environment from a refrigeration unit, resulting in disruption of businesses.
The Court heard that the company owns a lot that contains several businesses located in Windsor. In March 2010, the company hired some workers to renovate the basement. During the renovation, the workers attempted to remove a refrigeration tank. While trying to disconnect the tank, it sprung a leak in the valve which caused the release of anhydrous ammonia gas.
The company was charged following an investigation by the ministry's Investigations and Enforcement Branch.
The company was fined $25,000 plus a victim fine surcharge and was given six months to pay the fine.
