STRATFORD - On May 29, 2012, Kie Farms Ltd. pleaded guilty to one violation under theOntarioWater Resources Actfor discharging silage seepage into a nearby watercourse, which may have impaired the water.
The Court heard the company operates a dairy farm located in the Township of Perth South. In November 2009, the ministry received a complaint of poor water quality in a drain. The drain is a municipal drain that flows into the Thames River. The ministry responded to the complaint and determined the source of the contamination was coming from the company. Samples of water being discharged into the watercourse were obtained and sent to the ministry’s lab for analysis. The results indicated that the water and the contaminants had the ability to impair the water.
The company was charged following an investigation by the ministry’s Investigations and Enforcement Branch.
The company was fined $8,000 plus a victim fine surcharge and was given 6 months to pay the fine.
