Toronto Company Fined $150,000 for a Discharge of Sulphuric Acid Mist

Toronto - A Toronto company was fined $150,000 for a discharge of sulphuric acid mist into the natural environment causing adverse effects.

“Environmental protection legislation protects communities and the environment. Breaking these rules can result in serious penalties and is an offence the Ministry takes very seriously,” said Environment Minister Jim Bradley.

Chemtura Canada Inc. owns and operates a manufacturing facility located in Toronto.  The plant produces sulfonates and silicates used in lubes, industrial oil formulations and greases.

As a result of a pump failure at the facility, sulphuric acid mist was released causing adverse impacts to the surrounding environment and community.  Those exposed to the mist reported health impacts, businesses were shut down, people in the area were evacuated, and a number of schools in the area were impacted.

The company was fined $150,000 plus the victim fine surcharge of $37,500 and was given ninety days to pay the fine.
