Resident Fined $2,500 For Obstructing a Provincial Officer

Newmarket A resident was fined $2,500 for obstructing a Provincial Officer, by evading an officer and thereby preventing the officer from performing his duties in relation to the Drive Clean Program.

“The Province will prosecute those whose actions contravene Ontario’s environmental laws and damage our shared resources,” Environment Minister Jim Bradley.

Balbir S. Rai was driving a vehicle in the Town of Markham, when he was signaled by uniformed Provincial Officers in a marked ministry vehicle to stop.  Mr. Rai continued driving until he entered the driveway of a residence in the Town of Markham. Mr. Rai entered the residence and stayed inside until York Region Police were called to the scene to assist. With the police present, Mr. Rai exited the residence and allowed the Provincial Officers to inspect his vehicle.  The vehicle passed the inspection.

Mr. Rai was fined $2,500 plus the victim fine surcharge of $625 and was given one year to pay the fine.
