December 2, 2008 Backgrounder: Lake Simcoe Protection Act
Four decades of scientific studies show that impacts from human activities have impaired the health of the Lake Simcoe watershed ecosystem. The Lake Simcoe Science Advisory Committee recommends that Ontario needs to act immediately to protect the lake. Otherwise, the impact of current activities, future growth and other major stressors, notably climate change and new invasive species, will affect the health of the lake. December 2, 2008 New Law To Protect Lake Simcoe: McGuinty Government To Develop Lake Simcoe Protection Plan
Protection for Lake Simcoe took a major step forward with the passage of the Lake Simcoe Protection Act by the Ontario Legislature. The new legislation will enshrine watershed protection in law and require the province to develop a comprehensive plan to protect and restore the lake’s watershed and address the issue of phosphorus levels in the lake.

November 26, 2008 Ontario And Netherlands Partner On Environment: McGuinty Government Signs Pact On Air, Land And Water Issues
Ontario and the Netherlands have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on environmental cooperation. This year, they will focus on climate change, waste management, soil remediation and source water protection. For 2010, they have agreed to address sustainable water use through water conservation and efficiency, urban and regional planning, clean energy and transboundary and regional air pollution. The agreement may also open new opportunities for Ontario environment companies to market products, technologies and services to the Netherlands.

Ontario pledged its continued support for global cooperation in combating climate change yesterday. On behalf of Ontarians, Environment Minister John Gerretsen signed a global declaration in California at the close of a two-day Summit.

Organized by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Summit provides a forum for climate change leaders from around the world to discuss their experiences and challenges. Participants will be invited to pledge support for world-wide collaborative action in reducing greenhouse gases and developing the framework for a new global climate change treaty required after 2012.

November 7, 2008 Taking Next Steps In Pesticide Ban: McGuinty Government Asks Ontarians To Comment On Ban Details
The province is asking Ontarians to comment on the specifics of its cosmetic pesticides ban. In particular, the public is being asked to comment on:the proposed lists of pesticides (products and ingredients) banned for use and banned or restricted for sale, the rules for pesticide use on golf courses, the exceptions to the ban for public health or safety reasons.

November 3, 2008 Farmers To Help Protect Lake Simcoe: McGuinty Government Encouraging Environmental Protection
Ontario is helping farmers with operations in the Lake Simcoe watershed better protect and restore the health of the lake. Through the Lake Simcoe Farm Stewardship Initiative, a total of $500,000 is available this year for projects that improve water quality by contributing to lower phosphorus levels in the lake. Modifying tillage practices to reduce soil erosion and runoff. This initiative is part of the province’s commitment of $20 million in funding over four years to protect Lake Simcoe, announced in June 2008.
