Eco Tips

Save Money, Be Green In Your Home

  1. Turn off lights and computers when you leave the room.

  2. Choose low-flow faucets and showerheads. They can give you the same pressure with 25 to 60 per cent less water.

  3. Choose low-flow or dual-flush toilets. Some new models create more water pressure with less water for a cleaner flush.

  4. Use a toaster oven instead of the full-size oven for roasting or baking smaller items.

  5. Choose Energy Star-rated appliances that save water and electricity. For example, a front-loading washing machine uses up to 40 per cent less water and 60 per cent less energy.

  6. Only run the dishwasher or washing machine with full loads.

  7. Line-dry laundry whenever you can instead of the dryer.

  8. Use (and re-use) cloth napkins instead of paper, and dish towels, cloths or sponges instead of paper towels.

  9. Unplug cell phone chargers, computers, televisions, and printers, or use a power bar to cut the power. You can save up to 15 per cent of your electricity bill.

  10. Replace your old light bulbs with compact fluorescents.

  11. Install a programmable thermostat. Turn the heat down 2 degrees and the A/C up 2 degrees when you're sleeping or out. For more heating and cooling tips visit our friends at the Ministry of Energy.

  12. Use dimmers to lower lighting while watching television or for any other activities that don't require bright light.
