Use the car less. Commit to 10% less, but try to reduce it as much as possible. You'll save money, but you'll also fight global warming and keep our air cleaner and healthier.
Car pool. If you must use the car, try to fill each seat. Every extra car seat filled is one less car on the road.
Buy the most fuel-efficient car possible. Think also about the class of car you're buying. Do you really need an SUV? Fuel saved is money saved.
Maintain your car properly. Change the oil, get regular check-ups, replace or repair worn parts-a better maintained vehicle is more efficient, and therefore cleaner.
Don't idle. Why are you burning gas if you're not going anywhere? You're pretty much burning your money … and dirtying our air.
Reduce your car's weight to improve efficiency. This means don't carry things around in the trunk that you don't need to.
Use accessories less, like air conditioning, seat warmers, fog lights, etc. These drain power and reduce fuel efficiency, so don't use them if you don't need them.
Remove the roof rack if you're not using it. The roof rack creates drag and reduces the fuel efficiency of your car.
Don't speed. As you drive faster, more fuel is required to go the same distance. 90 km/hr is the most fuel-efficient speed.
Maintain your tires. The correct tire pressure will maximize your efficiency. And remember to remove your snow tires at the end of winter.
Drive "gently". Don't accelerate rapidly and then brake hard-you're wearing out your breaks and increasing your fuel consumption.
Use a block heater in the winter. You'll reduce the time it takes to warm up your car, and reduce your fuel usage.
Explore Ontario close to home! We have a beautiful province with many attractions. The side bonus is you'll also boost our economy.
Trains are much more fuel efficient and are a very comfortable way to travel, with more leg room, better air, and room to walk around.
Buses are a cheap alternative as well.
Fill up a car or van. Cars aren't exactly environmentally friendly but they are more efficient than planes, and significantly cheaper, especially when all the seats are filled.
Fly direct. Less time spent in the air means fewer emissions.
Combine trips. Need to visit two destinations that aren't far apart? Do it on the same trip.
Pack light. Less weight means less fuel is burned.
Fly economy. The more people on a plane, the fewer planes, the cleaner the air.
