Description: The ministry has released the results of soil sampling conducted in June 2013 to assess the levels of uranium in the soil in the vicinity of GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GE Hitachi), in response to community concerns about potential health impacts. The results indicate that uranium concentrations in the soils sampled by the ministry were all within the range of background concentrations typical in Ontario soils. Uranium is a common element in Ontario soils, and occurs naturally at low concentrations. Toronto Public Health reviewed the results and confirmed they do not feel that there is a health risk to the community.
