Ontario Deposit Return
In 2007, the province introduced Ontario’s Deposit Return Program to encourage diversion of wine and spirit containers from landfill. The program provides a refund for the return of empty beverage alcohol containers for recycling.
More than one billion bottles – 370,000 tonnes of glass – have been returned and 90 per cent of the recovered glass is being recycled into new products, such as glass bottles and fibreglass insulation.
