We rely on a steady supply of energy in nearly all aspects of our lives. Unfortunately, some of the traditional methods used to create energy (like coal-fired power generation) pollute our air, contribute to climate change, and are not sustainable.
This is why Ontario is encouraging the safe and responsible development of renewable energy projects like wind, water, solar, biomass and biogas power.
Ontario is providing clarity to energy developers about the approvals process for new projects, and is also working with these developers to ensure their projects don't pose any risk to human health and the environment.
For example, the province is streamlining the approvals process for wind projects, but is also regulating standards for these projects that are among the strictest in North America. These standards include a 550-metre setback for wind turbines and a noise limit based on 40 decibels.
Energy developers in Ontario must meet the requirements of the Renewable Energy Approvals (REA) regulation in order to carry out renewable energy projects. This regulation is based on the best available science, and protects human health and the environment.
