The ministry’s priority is to make sure that wastes, particularly those containing hazardous materials, are diverted from landfills. The Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste program was launched in July 2008 to collect and properly manage products such as paints, solvents, used oil filters, anti-freeze, pesticides, pressurized propane containers and single-use batteries, and keep them out of our landfills and waterways. In 2010, more than 26,000 tonnes of these household hazardous waste were collected through the program, which is operated by Stewardship Ontario and financed by industry.
Please visit the hazardous waste section for more information including where you can drop off your municipal hazardous or special waste.
