Industrial facilities that discharge wastewater directly into Ontario’s lakes and rivers must sample and analyze it and report the results to the ministry to ensure the quality and quantity meet the regulated limit.
Facilities that are regulated by Effluent Monitoring and Effluent Limit (EMEL) regulations must submit their results electronically using the Ministry of the Environment Wastewater System (MEWS) web application.
These regulations and environmental approvals require owners and operators of industrial facilities to report incidents of non-compliance to the ministry.
