What Areas of Concern are
Areas of concern are areas where the environment has been harmed, resulting in problems that include:
- beach closures
- loss of fish and wildlife habitat
- negative effects on fish and wildlife populations
- restrictions on fish consumption
- effects on drinking water
What Ontario is doing about the Great Lakes’ Areas of Concern
Canada and the United States identified 43 Areas of Concern under the 1987 amendment to the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, and agreed to develop remedial action plans to deal with the related environmental problems.
Ontario is working with the federal government to implement remedial action plans on the Canadian side. Together with conservation authorities, municipalities, Aboriginal communities, environmental groups, industry and others within the Great Lakes community, we continue to make steady progress to protect and restore each of these areas.
