Grab your trash bags and gloves. It's time for the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup!

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is about removing shoreline litter to help create healthy waters for everyone, benefiting wildlife and communities. From September 15 to 23, 2012, you can make a world of difference by joining Canadians from coast to coast to coast to clean up shoreline litter in your community.

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is one of the largest environmental activities in Canada, engaging tens of thousands of participants annually in every province and territory. Each year, the public support and general awareness of the program has increased, inspiring more volunteers to join in to make a difference. In 2011, 56,293 volunteers took part across Canada, collecting more than 144 metric tonnes of garbage from more than 3,144 km of shoreline.

Get involved by becoming a Site Coordinator and organizing a cleanup in your community or by registering to participate in an already organized cleanup. Start by searching the online map at ShorelineCleanup.ca to find a cleanup near you. You can even suggest new cleanup sites.

We can all make a difference by keeping beaches clean, planting trees along riversides and taking other steps to improve the Great Lakes and the water that flows into them. That's why Ontario's Great Lakes Guardian Fund is offering grants of up to $25,000 for projects that contribute to the health of the Great Lakes. Applications are now being accepted from not-for-profit groups. Get yours in by October 12, 2012 to be considered for this year's grants. Find out how to apply at GreatLakesFund@ontario.ca.
