Ontario companies that are reduction waste leaders

Home > Blog

Business has an important part to play in helping reduce the amount of waste going into landfills, keeping our land and water clean and creating jobs in Ontario's emerging green economy. Here are three Ontario companies that are taking the lead and cutting down waste.

EFS Plastics Inc. from Elmira, specializes in turning mixed plastic (such as yogurt cups, margarine tubs, etc.) and film plastic (including shopping bags) into pellets used to make tool boxes, pipe and other products. This process diverts more than 4,500 tonnes of plastic waste from landfills every year. The company is in the process of building a new facility in Listowel that will create at least 20 new jobs and dramatically increase its processing capabilities.

Scarborough's Calstone is a family-owned furniture manufacturer that has fully embraced green practices in its operations. Through its remanufacturing program, old Calstone products that are being replaced can be picked up and returned to the manufacturer at no charge to the customer. The old products are then broken down and recycled. Calstone's waste reduction and sustainability programs have won the company numerous awards and recognition for its environmental excellence.
