Clean-Air Plan for Industry

The Ontario government has taken another step toward implementing a Clean-Air Plan for Industry (CAPI), releasing a discussion paper that proposes regulations be used to establish limits on air emissions from the province's major industrial sectors. The Clean-Air Plan for Industry discussion paper proposes regulated emissions limits be set to ensure all major industrial sources in Ontario work to reduce smog and acid rain.

While industry has made gains in recent years in reducing air emissions, more needs to be done. Emissions data for 2000 show that industry is responsible for 65 per cent of Ontario's sulphur dioxide emissions and 17 per cent of the province's emissions or nitrogen oxides. Both pollutants are key contributors to smog and acid rain.
