Sulphur in gasoline — What you need to know

  • Sulphur is a natural part of crude oil that also is found in refined gasoline.
  • Not all gasolines are equal. Depending on the crude and refining methods in use, values range from as low as 30 ppm (parts per million) to 800 (ppm).
  • Through the combustion processes in vehicle engines, the sulphur contained in gasoline becomes an air pollutant that contributes to smog and acid rain.
  • Sulphur in gas reduces the efficiency of a car's emissions control system.
  • Buying lower-sulphur gasoline helps improve the quality of Ontario's air and helps your car operate at maximum efficiency.
