Ontario's Environmental Leaders

Corporate social responsibility and transparency are important to stay competitive in today’s global economy. Efficient and sustainable practices often provide an increase to the bottom line.

Ontario’s Environmental Leaders program is a unique partnership between government and companies that surpass environmental regulations and as responsible corporate citizens, make environmentally-friendly activities a part of their operations. Leaders vary from a hospital, Trillium Health Centre, to Teknion, a modern furniture manufacturer.

Leaders receive incentives like public recognition and faster processing of Certificate of Approvals.  These incentives are an opportunity to forge a specialized relationship with the ministry, while increasing efficiency and competitiveness.

Congratulations to General Motors, Fielding Chemical, Nalco and Exhibition Place who have just joined as Leaders.

  • General Motors’ total facility greenhouse gas emissions have reduced 49% between 1990 and 2006 through energy efficiency improvements and facility rationalization, even though they’re assembling over 12% more vehicles. GM also invested in one of the most environmentally advanced paint systems of its kind globally for the Oshawa plant.
  • Exhibition Place is home to the first urban wind turbine and hosts over 5.2 million visitors annually. Exhibition Place has also committed to 80% waste diversion by 2010.
  • Nalco is the world's leading water treatment company, and is reducing electricity use by 20% and making a 30% reduction in hazardous waste generation.
  • Fielding Chemical is the most sophisticated chemical and refrigerant recycling plant in Canada, and is converting 750,000 litres of hazardous waste into a useable product.
